Ceramides are essential lipids (natural fatty acids) that are present in the skin's top protective layer - also known as the skin barrier. Their main function is to help prevent moisture from getting out and external stressors from getting into the skin. When ceramides are used in skincare, they must be combined in an optimised ratio with both cholesterol and fatty acids. This is so they can help to effectively replenish the lipids that occur naturally within the skin.
