Cause & Prevention
One of the biggest areas of feedback we get from Medik8 customers is that they are worried about their pores. Too big, too blocked, too many blackheads - the problems with pores are seemingly endless.
What causes blocked pores?
The millions of tiny openings all over our skin house our hair follicles and produce sebum, an oily substance which is used to waterproof and moisturise the skin. Sebum provides a protective layer all over your body against irritants. While exceptionally important for your skin’s health, pores can also be the source of a lot of problems. They can become clogged with sebum and dead skin cells; often becoming red and inflamed blemishes. Clogged pores can also lead to blackheads which are caused by exposed sebum reacting with the air. This reaction causes sebum to darken in colour, leaving pores more noticeable. Overproduction of sebum can also overstretch pores as they open up to accommodate the flow of sebum, which ultimately makes the pores larger and more obvious.
At Medik8, we decided to tackle this head on, creating a specific pore range based on our extensive research into the multiple factors which contribute to enlarged pores.
Biology
Genetics play a key part in determining pore size. Those with naturally oily skin may be more prone to both blemishes and large pores. Testosterone levels are key to the production of sebum and as a result males tend to have larger pores than females. Both men and women have testosterone, which is important for sebum levels in the skin. An enzyme called 5-alpha reductase converts the testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, which stimulates sebum production. Female pore size may fluctuate throughout the month due to hormone level changes which alter the flow of sebum through pores.
Ageing
The skin is supported by an intricate network of collagen and elastin, which leaves pores taut and skin firm. As we age, the network of collagen and elastin begins to break down, leading to a loss of elasticity. This allows gravity to have a stronger pull on the skin’s surface; stretching out the pores to a more noticeable oval shape.
Environment
Sun damage and environmental damage can accelerate skin ageing; intensifying the rate of collagen and elastin breakdown. The environment can also dry out the skin; shrinking the skin’s tissues which stretch the edges of the pore.
